San Francisco, to Germany, to Athens, to CreteLong day! We've been en route for 24 hours! The first day of our three-week trip together, April and I met at the airport at around 10:00 a.m., then boarded our plane at the San Francisco Airport at around 2:00 p.m.
Once we were airborne, we had a smooth flight of 10+ hours to Frankfurt. There was a two-hour layover in Frankfurt, after which we took a two-hour comfortable Lufthansa flight to Athens. We went through customs in Athens and picked up our tickets at the Aegean Airlines Desk. We had a three-hour layover there.
The flight to Crete was short and pleasant. We landed as the sun was setting, very worn out from the hours of travel and waiting. At the Crete airport, the car rental man was late, which gave us a fright at first. But he showed up and delivered our Citroen. He gave us directions to the hotel in Xhania, about 30 miles away. Amazingly, I drove us exactly as hoped, directly to the hotel.
We parked our cute little Citroen stick-shift in the harbor parking lot, took our luggage and wheeled it up the cobblestone streets to the hotel, up the stairs and at long last to our room in the beautiful restored villa called “Casa Leone”. April took the couch-bed next to the bathroom for tonight, and I took the double bed up the stairs. We simply crashed!!
Before sleeping, I took this picture from the balcony of our room at the Hotel. The historic old harbor in Chania is so beautiful!
